From Intern to Greenhouse Manager: The Inspiring Journey of Evili Martins

Meet Evili Martins, a passionate horticulturist originally from Brazil. Her journey began at EARTH University in Costa Rica, where her love for plants truly blossomed. During her time there, she delved into fascinating research, exploring how different fertilization methods impact coffee plants in Costa Rica's unique soils. Her dedication and curiosity set the stage for an exciting career in agriculture.

After graduating from EARTH University, Evili took a bold step by joining our Ohio International Intern Program (OIIP). This was a game-changer for her. She was eager to put her academic knowledge into practice and learn from some of the best in the field at the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS).

During her internship, Evili didn't shy away from getting her hands dirty. She jumped into projects that pushed the boundaries of sustainable agriculture. One of the highlights was exploring the innovative use of biostimulants to boost the growth and stress tolerance of greenhouse crops. The hands-on experience and mentorship she received exceeded her expectations and fueled her passion even more.

Fueled by her internship experience, Evili decided to pursue a master’s degree in Horticulture from CFAES at Ohio State University. Her thesis research was nothing short of groundbreaking. She focused on using microbial and non-microbial biostimulants to enhance greenhouse floriculture crops. This research not only showcased her skills but also her commitment to advancing sustainable practices in horticulture.

Evili's dedication paid off when she took home 2nd place in the MS Research Category at the Graduate Research Symposium. This annual event, hosted by the HCS Graduate Student Association, brings together students and faculty to share their research. Evili, under the advisement of Dr. Michelle Jones, focused on the application of beneficial bacteria in ornamental plants under abiotic stress as an alternative to increasing plant quality post-harvest. She shared, "I was thankful and glad to receive second place. There were a lot of great projects, and I couldn't be more honored."

Today, Evili Martins is the Greenhouse Manager at a prestigious company in the United States. In her role, she oversees everything from environmental conditions to the maintenance of greenhouse facilities. She's also heavily involved in supporting research initiatives, assisting with biology lab projects, and coordinating community outreach. Her diverse experience and academic background make her a true leader in the field.

Evili's journey from Brazil to her current role in the U.S. is a testament to the opportunities that our internship program can offer. Her story proves that with passion and dedication, you can achieve great things.
